Philomath School District

On May 18, 2010 voters approved a $29.5 million bond issue to improve District facilities. Below are preliminary descriptions of the work that is anticipated to take place.

Philomath High School:
Scheme A: The extensive renovation and addition to PHS includes saving and updating the existing community pool and its infrastructure, the existing main gym, the south classroom wing, and the attached science classroom pod and media center. The main gym will be renovated into a student commons and performance space with the west wall removed between the existing support columns. The existing platform area will be enhanced and new moveable seating will be installed; upgrades to acoustics, lighting and sound will be included as a component of this package. New classrooms will be built between the science and media center pod and a new 2 story classroom wing will provide a total of 30 classrooms. A new office and counseling suite will be added at the main entry and new activity classrooms will be added for band and music. On the east side a new sports and activity addition will house a competition-size gymnasium with a mat room, weight room, and locker room facilities as well as a new auxiliary gymnasium on the site of the existing one. Site circulation and site infrastructure will be included in this scheme as well as an entirely new physical plant, new HVAC system, and new water service. The new and existing building components will be fully fire sprinkled to meet current code.
Scheme B: This plan is similar in most ways to Scheme A; the two major differences are that the existing auxiliary gym would be saved and renovated, and the performance space upgrades to the commons in this scheme would be much less extensive. The other savings in this package would be value engineering on some of the infrastructure improvements as well as revising the extent of the finish upgrades throughout the existing building.

Philomath Middle School: The focus of the work at the middle school is capital maintenance addressing building envelope, mechanical and building safety issues. For the building envelope upgrade, the major component is the roof replacement; this work will also involve a seismic upgrade and rigid insulation. The next piece is siding and window replacement all which will enhance the thermal properties of the envelope. The HVAC system will be upgraded with new controls and replacement of actuators and dampers throughout. The other major component is replacement of the chiller which is original to the building. The plumbing system is predominantly galvanized piping and due to water quality issues and constant failures will be replaced. Most of the electrical work is related to the new HVAC work requirements however some additional convenience outlets and work on the faulty science hoods are included.

Philomath Elementary School: The focus of the work at PES is the upgrade of the existing classroom wing to bring this area up to the level of the rest of this facility. This will consist of three primary components – full replacement of the HVAC system with an entirely new system; with the removal of the old HVAC system, a new roof and ceilings for the classrooms will installed; and the attic space will also receive additional insulation and required seismic work will be accomplished. The existing “egress only” fire sprinkler system will be upgraded to a fully NFPA compliant system. The original plumbing fixtures will be replaced. Electrical branch panels in the classroom wing will be replaced. Finally the finishes in the classroom wing will be upgraded throughout.

Blodgett Elementary School: Capital maintenance is the primary focus at BES. The scope of work is similar to PES – roof, siding and window replacement in the exterior envelope as well as HVAC, electrical and plumbing upgrades. And, finally, new finishes for the existing building.
