This Senior facility is located in Wortman Park. The city park and its facilities were constructed by the Forest Service as a WPA project during the 1930’s. Our primary goal for the design of this facility was to ensure it conformed to the surroundings, including the heavily wooded setting and existing buildings of “camp-style” architecture. Locating the building was done in such a way that only two trees had to be removed, one of which was already damaged. Orientation of the facility was done so that the majority of the rooms to open South onto the patio, giving a view of the old-growth grove of fir trees. Construction of the parking lot disturbed a minimum number of trees as well, maintaining the park-like atmosphere. Activities within the building include senior meals, areas for dance and exercise, quilting, arts and crafts, billiards and other recreation and education spaces. Also included is a retail store off of the lobby, where seniors are able to sell their crafts. The building also has health service facilities and a commercial kitchen. Intimate areas for casual conversation or reading are near the centrally-located fireplace. Partial funding was provided through the Community Development Block Grant program.
